Hello - the 2010 ASHE Annual Conference will be held in Indianapolis, also home to the headquarters of the NCAA. For those interested in college athletics research, this is an opportunity to highlight our work and reach out to the NCAA for sessions on the program. For some of you this has already been a topic of discussion over email and other conversations about how we might be purposeful in leveraging this location to create support for this research within the ASHE community.
To that end Welch Suggs & I are writing to offer a few suggestions and requests as we all begin thinking about proposals for ASHE this fall:
1. PAPERS. If you are considering a submitting a proposal for a research paper please let us know what topic area (student-athlete issues, institutional policy/organizational issues, and educational foundations for athletics) your work falls under. We will pass along potential topic areas to the program chair about papers that might be featured in the program after the review process is complete.
2. SYMPOSIA. If you are interested in forming symposium proposals organized around topics within athletics--such as student issues, institutional policy/organizational issues, finance, and educational foundations for athletics--please contact us. We would like to help share information among individuals considering similar topic areas in the program before the review process. We will pass along potential topic areas to the program chair about papers that might be featured in the program after the review process is complete.
3. OTHER POSSIBILITIES. Welch & I are working with the program chair to arrange other sessions such as a session with NCAA staff and possibly an informal gathering to explore possibilities for developing work on athletics within ASHE going forward.
Although we have no influence in the program committee decisions, our thought is to help inform the program chair about potential topics and help coordinate efforts among those of us who are interested in research on college athletics. Once the program in announced we will continue to work with the program committee to publicize successful papers & sessions at the 2010 conference.
